About the Monastery
St. Joseph's Monastery at Mannanam is one of Kerala's most important Christian pilgrimage centres and the final resting place of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Established on 11 May 1831, it is the Mother House of the CMI Congregation, the first indigenous Catholic religious congregation in Kerala. Thousands of pilgrims from different faiths visit this sacred place every year seeking peace, blessings, and spiritual guidance.
History
Historical Background
The monastery was founded under the leadership of Fr. Thomas Pallithanam, Fr. Thomas Porookkara, and Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Construction was completed in 1837 and the church was renovated in 1955 and 1996. Mannanam became a landmark in Kerala's educational and cultural history as the birthplace of the state's first wooden printing press, Sanskrit school, and several early parish schools. Following the canonization of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara in 2014, the monastery gained worldwide recognition as an international pilgrimage destination.

Saint Chavara's Tomb
The sacred prayer hall where the mortal remains of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara are preserved. It is the most visited place inside the monastery.
Chavara Museum
Displays the personal belongings of the saint including his bed, writing table, wooden boat, manuscripts, photographs, and historical exhibits.
Saint Chavara Room
The preserved room where Saint Chavara spent his time in prayer, meditation, study, and rest.
