About the Temple
Aymanam Sree Narasimhaswamy Temple, situated about 5 km from Kottayam town near the Aymanam Panchayat Office, is one of the most revered Narasimha temples in Kerala. The temple is famous for its unique idol, its connection with the Pandavas, its centuries-old traditions, and the grand annual festivals that attract thousands of devotees.
History & Mythology
Pandava Legend
The temple is popularly known as Pandavath Sree Narasimhaswamy Temple. According to legend, the Pandavas worshipped this idol during their exile.
Origin of Aymanam
The name Aymanam comes from Tamil "Ay" meaning five and Sanskrit "Vanam" meaning forest. It refers to the five ancient forests that once surrounded the village.
Unique Idol
Unlike most Narasimha temples, the deity here is worshipped in the fierce Narasimha Avatar form. A sacred Sri Chakra is also installed beside the deity.
Festivals & Rituals
The temple festival marks the beginning of the festival season in Central Travancore. The eight-day annual festival concludes with the grand Aarattu during the Malayalam month of Chingam. Narasimha Jayanti is celebrated with Kalabhabhishekam, Pushpabhishekam and special poojas. The famous offering called Naratala, prepared using boiled rice and grated coconut, is believed to bring good health and long life to children.
